Alupo launches national cleaning days initiative

The Vice President of Uganda, Major (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, has today in Kampala presided over the launch of the National Cleaning Days initiative, aimed at promoting sanitation and hygiene across the country. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Sharifa Buzeki.

Speaking at the launch, Vice President Alupo said the clean-up exercise will be conducted on the last Saturday of every month throughout Uganda. She urged all Ugandans to actively participate, emphasizing that the initiative is for the benefit of everyone.

“I want to thank you for taking part in this important exercise. The implementation of this initiative will improve public health, reduce the burden of preventable diseases, lower household and government expenditure on treatment, and contribute to a cleaner environment.”

The Vice President also commended Ugandans who had already participated in clean-up activities within their villages and households.

Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja described the initiative as a significant step toward improving the well-being of Ugandans, adding that the government is committed to ensuring the monthly exercise is sustained.

Meanwhile, KCCA has been implementing its weekly “Weyonje” clean-up campaign in different parts of Kampala under the leadership of Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki. During one of the recent campaigns, Buzeki urged residents to embrace regular clean-up activities, noting that maintaining a clean environment is essential for public health.

She, however, highlighted a shortage of garbage collection trucks, revealing that KCCA currently has only 34 trucks to serve the city.

The National Cleaning Days initiative is expected to strengthen community participation in sanitation efforts, improve environmental cleanliness, and reduce the spread of preventable diseases across Uganda.
