The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has stepped up efforts to promote sanitation in the city through a community clean-up campaign held at Katende Zone, Bukesa Parish, in Kampala’s Central Division.
The exercise, held on Saturday, was led by KCCA Executive Director Hajjat Sharifa Buzeki, alongside various teams that participated in community sensitisation and education, safe toilet emptying, pest and vector control, garbage collection and drainage clearance.
In her remarks, Buzeki challenged local leaders to take the lead in organising sanitation activities, saying it is their responsibility to ensure their communities remain clean.
She also urged residents and local leaders to take pride in the city by keeping it clean and encouraging others to do the same. She emphasised that people should not allow others to litter in their presence.
“A clean Kampala is our shared responsibility, and the city we desire begins with each one of us,” she said.
KCCA Director of Public Health Dr Sarah Zalwango commended the community, local leaders, Nabugabo Updeal, 7hills and Towa Uchafu teams for actively participating in the initiative, which is conducted every Saturday in different city divisions.
“I thank you all for joining us in this exercise. Let’s make cleanliness a daily habit for a healthier and safer Kampala,” she said.
Local leaders welcomed the exercise, saying it would help transform their communities. However, they also raised concerns that KCCA pledged to address.
According to KCCA, about 70 per cent of diseases affecting Ugandans are preventable, with many linked to health-related behaviours.
Earlier this week, KCCA also hosted a delegation from Rwanda to discuss air quality.
