Buzeki leads Weyonje clean-up campaign in Nakawa Division

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki has today led a team in the Weyonje clean-up campaign in Nakawa Division, Kampala.

The clean-up exercise involved several activities, including educating the public about garbage sorting and cleaning blocked drainage channels, among others.

Local leaders and members of the public thanked KCCA for the initiative, saying it will help promote a clean environment in their communities.

Speaking to journalists, Buzeki explained the significance of the campaign in different parts of the country, particularly in the five divisions of Kampala where the exercise is being conducted.

“I want to appreciate everyone who has joined my team today to clean up this place. This initiative is aimed at promoting a clean environment and reminding our people that it is very important for everyone to be clean because when people become sick, they spend so much money, yet most of them have very low incomes,” she said.

The Executive Director said KCCA will continue with the initiative because it has already produced positive results.

On the issue of inadequate public toilets in Nakawa, Buzeki said residents should always find ways of maintaining clean and hygienic toilets. However, she said KCCA would explore ways of supporting them through local leaders.

“I want to assure you that Kampala Capital City Authority will continue to make sure that the environment is clean. About the issue of constructing a public toilet in this place, we shall see what to do because every division must have a clean public toilet to enable residents who cannot afford private toilets to use those ones,” she added.

Robert Kayanja, the area LC I chairman, thanked KCCA for bringing the campaign to their division and pledged that local leaders and residents would maintain the cleanliness.

“We are thankful that KCCA has come to our division. We have been seeing this campaign happening in various divisions, but we are so happy and delighted that today we are the ones hosting the campaign. I just want to urge our locals to always take the matter of cleaning very seriously because hospitals are very expensive, yet most diseases can be prevented if we are vigilant,” he said.

Others who attended the clean-up campaign included KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi, Nakawa Division Mayor Buken Ali, Authority Councillors and Director of Public Health Dr. Sarah Zalwango, among others.

They urged the public to maintain cleanliness and avoid littering, saying that while smartness is optional, it adds value to individuals and communities.

KCCA has repeatedly appealed to the government to increase its budget to enable the authority to acquire more garbage trucks. In the current financial year, the government allocated funds for five garbage trucks.

According to Buzeki, this is only the beginning, and the authority remains hopeful that the government will fulfill its promise to provide more garbage trucks.

The Executive Director was also surprised with a birthday celebration during the clean-up campaign.
