Vice President Alupo launches second National Cleaning Day in Kira Municipality

Vice President Maj (Rtd) Jesca Alupo has launched the second National Cleaning Day in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, at UMEA Primary School.

Alupo said keeping Uganda clean is everyone’s responsibility and assured the public that the Government will continue supporting the initiative by providing the necessary equipment, including vehicles.

She urged Ugandans to participate in the cleaning exercise, which is held on the last Saturday of every month, saying the initiative will help prevent diseases, create employment opportunities through waste sorting and prepare communities to receive visitors ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Alupo also urged Ugandans to make the cleaning exercise a people-led initiative rather than leaving the responsibility to the Government.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja thanked President Museveni for supporting the monthly cleaning initiative and warned the public against dumping waste in drainage channels, saying blocked drainage systems can affect roads.

She also encouraged Ugandans to sort waste and practise proper waste management at home, including teaching children about cleanliness. She announced that the next National Cleaning Day will be held in Hoima City.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Diana Atwine, cautioned residents against burning rubbish because of its potential health effects. She also warned the public against using paracetamol to cook beans, saying the practice is dangerous.

Local leaders, meanwhile, appealed to the Government to construct a government secondary school in the municipality to enable children from low-income families to continue their education after primary school.

The event was attended by ministers, Members of Parliament, town clerks and other local leaders. A moment of silence was also observed in honour of the late Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
