NRM announces dates for upcoming local government, Adjumani MP nominations

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, says the party performed exceedingly well in the recently concluded local government elections.

Speaking at a press conference at the NRM offices in Kampala, Odoi said the party won most of the positions contested across the country and thanked members for entrusting the party with the opportunity to serve them.

According to Odoi, the Electoral Commission conducted elections for women council committees in 10,717 parishes across the country on August 7, 2026.

He said preliminary statistics collected from 135 out of 146 districts show that NRM won 47,405 positions, while independents won 1,688 and other political parties secured 389 positions.

Odoi also announced the programme for nominations for upcoming elections.

He said nominations for pending councillor positions will be held from August 17 to 18, 2026, at NRM district offices. The exercise will also include nominations for the Member of Parliament for Adjumani, to replace the late Hon. Moses Ali.

He added that nominations for NRM flag bearers will be held on September 7 and 8, 2026, at district headquarters under the supervision of the NRM Secretariat.

Odoi said persons seeking the parliamentary position must be Ugandan citizens, aged 18 years and above, and members of the NRM. Parliamentary aspirants will also be required to pay a non-refundable nomination fee of three million Ugandan shillings.

Meanwhile, NRM primaries for women council positions at sub-county level are scheduled to take place tomorrow. Eligible candidates must be women and members of the parish women’s committee.

Odoi said representatives of women with disabilities elected from among female persons with disabilities through their structures at sub-county level are also eligible to contest and vote in the NRM primaries.

He clarified that the women council elections at this level will be conducted strictly through an electoral college and by lining up, with only members of the electoral college participating.

The NRM Electoral Commission, he said, will continue issuing periodic updates on the subsequent stages of the women council elections.
