NRM holds Women’s Council primaries ahead of National Conference

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has today conducted party primaries to elect representatives for various positions on the NRM Women’s Council.

The elections, held in Kampala, were led by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi, who warned members who lost in the primaries against standing as independents.

Odoi said the elections were peaceful and well organised, urging those who emerged victorious to represent the party well.

“I am happy to announce that today we have had very successful and organised elections. I want to make it clear that if you know that you did not go through the party primaries, please don’t stand as an independent. I want to assure you that I will be on the ground to make sure that the party flag bearers go through. This is a mighty party, and I want to assure you that we are going to win,” Odoi said.

Ann Lumumba emerged as the Chairperson of the NRM Women’s Council, securing 109 votes against incumbent Faridah Kibowa, who obtained 25 votes.

Lumumba will be deputised by Agnes Kirabo, who received 81 votes. She pledged to work for all women across the country.

NRM Women’s League Chairperson Adrine Kobusingye appealed to all members who participated in the elections to remain calm and support those who emerged victorious.

Kobusingye said NRM is a big party and that all its members should consider themselves winners, regardless of the outcome of the primaries.

“I want to thank the chairman of the commission for organising this exercise. I am happy that this has been a peaceful election, and I want to assure all women that we are all winners,” she said.

Meanwhile, former chairperson Faridah Kibowa thanked women for giving her the opportunity to serve during her tenure and wished Lumumba and the entire council success.

The National Conference for the election of the National Women’s Committees is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, and Friday, September 4, 2026.
