The Kampala Capital City Authority (Kampala Capital City Authority) Council has elected new leadership following a vote held at City Hall in Kampala after the swearing-in of the new Council earlier this week.

The 35-member Council met to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The election was presided over by Her Worship Ritah Neumbe Kidasa, who guided the process under the Kampala Capital City Act, Cap 195.

Election results showed that Hon. John Mary Ssebuwufu (Nakawa West / Nakawa I) was elected Speaker with 18 votes while Hon. Kaye Ali Ssalongo got 16 votes. One vote was invalid.

For Deputy Speaker, Hon. Namazzi Olive Kagobola was elected with 20 votes while Dr. Kwarijja Nicholas received 15 votes.

Both elected leaders are members of the National Unity Platform (National Unity Platform).

Her Worship Kidasa announced the results and confirmed that the election was conducted according to the law.

In his acceptance speech, Speaker Ssebuwufu pledged to focus on unity, teamwork and improved service delivery. He also called for cooperation between the Council and the executive led by Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki.

Deputy Speaker Namazzi Kagobola said she would advocate for fairness and equal service delivery for all residents of Kampala.

Kampala Lord Mayor Eng. Ronald Balimwezo congratulated the new leaders and urged cooperation beyond political differences.

Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki also pledged to work with the Council regardless of political affiliation.

The position of Deputy Lord Mayor is expected to be filled next week from eligible councilors with at least Advanced Level education or its equivalent.
