As campaigning for the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election enters its final days, leaders from the major political parties have intensified efforts to rally support for their respective candidates.
The by-election was called following the death of former Woman MP, Hon. Hellen Nakimuli of the National Unity Platform (NUP), in April this year.
On Tuesday, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for Buganda Region, Hon. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, accompanied by district party leaders, conducted a series of mobilisation activities across the district. One of the engagements involved a meeting with boda boda riders under their umbrella association, Boda Boda Kalangala Ku Museveni, in Kalangala Town Council.
The meeting marked the beginning of an intensified grassroots campaign spearheaded by Kasolo in support of the NRM flag bearer, Idah Nabayiga. The mobilisation drive aims to rally support for the party candidate ahead of the June 24, 2026 polls as scheduled by the Electoral Commission.
During the meeting, Bujumba County MP William Lugoloobi urged the boda boda riders to mobilise voters to support Nabayiga, saying this would enable leaders to work together in reviving projects such as the Aqua Park and the palm oil project.
Meanwhile, NRM flag bearer Idah Nabayiga camped at Ggunga Landing Site in Buggala Parish, Mazinga Sub-county, where she met residents and canvassed for support.
The NRM Director of Communication and Publicity, Hon. Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, also joined the campaign team and called upon voters to support the party candidate. Dombo thanked President Yoweri Museveni for introducing oil palm growing in the district, which he said has improved livelihoods.
Dombo later joined NRM mobilisation teams on Buggala Island and addressed residents at Kaazi-Malanga Landing Site in Bujumba Sub-county. He expressed gratitude to the community for its continued support of the ruling party and appealed for votes for Nabayiga.
Meanwhile, other contenders in the race, including independent candidates Helen Flavia Nagawa, Agnes Nasuuna and Sharifa Babirye, continue to campaign across the district using various strategies to win support.
The National Unity Platform candidate, Irene Nampala, is also receiving backing from party leaders. During recent campaign activities, NUP leaders described her as the best candidate among the five contestants.
Speaking at one of the campaign events, Mukono Municipality Woman MP Hon. Gorreth Namugga urged voters to support Nampala, describing her as a humble leader who deserves an opportunity to serve the people of Kalangala.
Campaigns are expected to end on June 22, 2026, ahead of polling day on June 24.
