The Democratic Party (DP) President General, Norbert Mao, during a press conference held today at the Balintuma National Campaign Headquarters in Kampala, briefed the media on what the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council had adopted.
According to the President General, the National Executive Committee and the National Council resolved that the cooperation agreement between the Democratic Party and the National Resistance Movement be formally received and adopted as a working document of the party.
“The committees agreed that the party will conduct a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of the said cooperation agreement and report back to the National Executive Committee and the National Council within one month. This assessment will also include input from the National Resistance Movement, which will be formally notified and required to show cause why the cooperation agreement should not be terminated,” Mao stated.
He further emphasised that every effort would be made to keep the party united, directing leaders at all levels to mobilise party members and prospective members to participate in the ongoing membership application and registration process. This process will establish a new membership register, which will serve as the foundation for the party’s structural leadership renewal ahead of the National Delegates Conference, scheduled for May 30, 2025. “The party should also mobilise resources to purchase an omnibus to facilitate the movement of party members in carrying out party activities,” he added.
Hon. Mao also stated that the Democratic Party should investigate the status of the party’s printing machine and provide a detailed report to the National Executive Committee. “The committees agreed that candidates should be fielded in all national and local elective positions and that an assessment should be conducted to determine the suitability of candidates running for different electoral positions. Additionally, the party should print branded items and paraphernalia and distribute them across party branches to enhance marketing and promotion,” Mao emphasised.
Furthermore, the 12th National Council and National Executive Committee adopted a resolution that cultural anthems of specific regions where party organ meetings are held be sung as a sign of respect and recognition for Uganda’s diverse peoples, cultures, and traditions. They also expressed appreciation to the party secretariat for its excellence in organising and branding the two meetings of party organs.
“There is a lot of unemployment in Uganda, and we must address it. We have never been afraid to engage with our opponents. Leadership requires telling people what they don’t want to hear,” Mao concluded.
The meetings took place from March 5 to 7, 2025, in Soroti City.
