During the weekly joint press briefing held at the Uganda Police Force headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, the principal public relations officer of the Uganda Examinations Board (UNEB), Ms. Jennifer Kalule Musamba, confirmed that the board has established a rapid response team to support schools in effectively submitting the scores and project work of their candidates on time. “Nearly 80% of schools have submitted so far. We urge the remaining schools to meet the deadline of 30th October 2024. Those needing assistance can call our toll-free lines: 0800-111-427 or 0800-211-077,” she said.

In addition, UNEB informed the media that their distributors delivered examination materials for the third week to all stations nationwide over the weekend. “This paved the way for a smooth start this morning. The distributing teams received the required security clearance where necessary, for which we are grateful to the security agencies,” Kalule said. Regarding security concerns, UNEB reported that in Tororo district, a teacher who pleaded not guilty to unauthorised possession of examination-related materials has been remanded until 30th October 2024.

Similarly, Mr. Juuko Denis, a teacher at St. Mary’s Junior School in Kapeeka, Nakaseke district, is due to appear before the Grade One Magistrate. His co-accused, Ejagu Moses, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty. In Mityana, the Grade One Magistrate remanded three teachers to Namukozi prison until 29th October 2024 for possessing unauthorised examination materials. The trio—Onyango Thomas of Hillside Kalonga S.S., Sekiranda David, and Kambugu Livingston of Bujjubi S.S. in Mityana—were arrested during the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) chemistry practical paper by a scout with a copy of the exam.

The accused appeared in court for a plea hearing on 22nd November and pleaded not guilty. They applied for bail, which was denied due to the lack of verified sureties for the third accused, who was arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe someone at the Magistrate’s court in Mityana.

In Kampala, police in Wandegeya are investigating a case involving two Somali nationals and a Ugandan, all UCE transitional candidates. The trio are registered under Lugogo UNEB Hall/Centre, sitting at Bat Valley Primary School. They are alleged to have smuggled phones into the examination room during last Tuesday’s chemistry practical exam. Investigations are ongoing as the candidates finalise their examinations, Kalule stated.

According to UNEB, preparations for this year’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), scheduled for 6th and 7th November, are underway. “Final preparations are being made this week with the briefing of various contracted professionals. The briefing for candidates will take place on Monday, 4th November 2024, at the schools.

We call upon primary school headteachers and P7 teachers to ensure that candidates are thoroughly briefed to follow the instructions as outlined in the timetables that have already been distributed. The Board also urges various faith communities to come together in prayer for P7 candidates from Friday to Sunday nationwide,” Jennifer confirmed. Heads of centres are also reminded to adhere to the Ministry of Health guidelines regarding MPOX disease.
