Various efforts have been made to educate the public about the importance of protecting the environment. Along Hoima Road, near the Kasubi Tombs, signposts remind people that cleanliness is key to maintaining a green and sustainable environment.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) employs workers who carry out this responsibility every day. One of them, Kamya Ayub (not his real name), shared some of the challenges he faces and why he chose to do the job.
“I am humbled to have this opportunity to talk about my work as a street cleaner. I have done this job for a long time. I love the environment, which is why I continue doing this work even at my age. There are many challenges, but I prefer to focus on what makes me happy and what benefits the environment. The biggest challenge is that this area is surrounded by many trees, and leaves keep falling all the time. When supervisors come and find the place covered with leaves, it can create problems for us. Nevertheless, because I care about environmental conservation, I enjoy my work,” he said.
Meanwhile, during yesterday’s sitting of the Kampala Central Division Urban Council, the Mayor, Salim Uhuru, and his deputy, Hanipher Mpungu, reaffirmed their commitment to working with elected councillors for the betterment of residents. They also pledged support to various council committees, including the committee responsible for environmental matters.
“I want to assure you that we shall work together. I urge all of us to cooperate so that we can serve the people of Kampala Central Division effectively,” the Mayor said.
Kikulwe Moses, one of the councillors, urged the government to be fair when relocating people from wetlands and other protected areas as part of environmental conservation efforts.
Former Speaker of Kampala Central Division Urban Council, Katawera Erieza Balwaine, called on KCCA’s top leadership to increase the support it provides to the council.
In a related development, My Tree Initiative and its partners yesterday launched a campaign to plant at least 3,000 trees. Speaking at Atlas High School in Wakiso District, the organizers said the campaign aims to conserve the environment and promote climate action across the country.
