Kabaka Mutebi marks 33rd coronation anniversary with thanksgiving service at Watoto Church

Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has today marked the 33rd anniversary of his coronation with a thanksgiving service held at Watoto Church Bweyogerere in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.

The service brought together leaders from the Buganda Kingdom, the central government, religious institutions, and other invited guests to celebrate the Kabaka’s three decades of leadership since his coronation at Naggalabi Buddo in 1993.

Leading the service, the Lead Pastor of Watoto Church Bweyogerere Campus, Pastor Julius Roturonyo, thanked God for preserving the Kabaka’s life and prayed for continued good health, wisdom, and many more years of leadership. He also encouraged believers to remain thankful to God in all circumstances. During the service, Watoto Church contributed UGX 38 million towards the celebration.

Delivering his address, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, thanked God for enabling the Kabaka to lead the kingdom for 33 years. Speaking under the theme, “Fortitude as We Protect Our Cultural Values,” Mayiga said the kingdom’s greatest achievement has been strengthening Buganda’s cultural heritage. He appreciated the central government for restoring some of the kingdom’s properties while urging it to return the remaining assets. He also called upon Buganda’s subjects to embrace education and take responsibility for preserving their cultural heritage. Mayiga expressed gratitude that the Kabaka remains in good health and said he is expected to resume attending public engagements soon.

Representing President Yoweri Museveni, Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja congratulated the Kabaka on behalf of the government. In the President’s message, Museveni commended the Buganda Kingdom for promoting the welfare of its people and acknowledged its contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to preserving Uganda’s cultural institutions and called upon all Ugandans to reject sectarianism in order to promote national unity. Government contributed UGX 40 million towards the anniversary celebrations.
