KCCA releases 2025 road safety report

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Initiative for Global Road Safety and its partners, has released the 2025 Kampala Road Safety Report, providing the latest data on road crashes, deaths, injuries and risk factors in the city.

The report, released yesterday in Kampala, shows that 407 people died in road crashes in Kampala in 2025, a slight increase from the 404 deaths recorded in 2024. However, when population growth is taken into account, the road traffic death rate declined from 9.9 deaths per 100,000 people in 2024 to 9.5 in 2025.

Serious injuries also declined by about three percent, from 3,078 in 2024 to 2,993 in 2025.

The report indicates that vulnerable road users continue to bear the greatest burden, with pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists accounting for 94 percent of all road traffic deaths. Motorcyclists alone accounted for half of the fatalities, while young adults aged 20 to 39 remained the most affected age group.

Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo called for collective efforts to reduce road crashes.

“Every road traffic death is one too many. Behind every statistic is a family that has lost a loved one or a survivor whose life has changed forever,” Balimwezo said.

He urged continued investment in safer roads, stronger enforcement and public awareness, particularly to protect pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Representing the KCCA Executive Director, Benon Kigenyi said the report would help the authority make evidence-based decisions on road safety.

“This report provides us with a clear roadmap for action. By identifying where crashes occur, who is most at risk and the behaviours contributing to these crashes, we can better target infrastructure improvements, enforcement and communication campaigns to save lives,” Kigenyi said.

Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura urged all road users to exercise caution and called on drivers to follow and respect traffic laws while using the roads.

The report was launched in Kampala in the presence of the Lord Mayor, KCCA officials, traffic police and other road safety stakeholders.
