The Chairman of Nsooba Slaughter House in Kawempe Division, Sekanyo Suleiman, has warned that beef prices may remain high for several months despite the onset of the rains.
Sekanyo attributed the high cost of beef partly to the rising US dollar exchange rate, high fuel prices and poor road conditions in some cattle-producing areas.
Speaking to the media, he explained that although rainfall improves pasture for cattle, the rains had only recently started, meaning farmers would need at least three months for grass to grow sufficiently to improve cattle feeding.
“I know many people think that since the rains have started, beef prices will automatically go down. It is true that when it rains, cattle can feed on fresh grass. However, the rains have just started, meaning we need at least three months,” Sekanyo said.
He also commended the government for constructing roads, saying improved road networks had made it easier to transport healthy cattle to slaughterhouses.
However, he noted that some roads in rural areas still required rehabilitation, while high fuel prices continued to increase transport costs.
Sekanyo called on his colleagues in the slaughterhouse business to use their available resources wisely and avoid unnecessary expenditure.
He also encouraged them to maintain a culture of saving, saying the practice had benefited them in many ways and should not be abandoned.
The chairman also wished candidates sitting their 2026 examinations success.
