Headteacher calls for more teacher training on new curriculum

The Headteacher of Greenlight Secondary School in Wakiso District, Hamidu Ssenkaaba, has urged the Ministry of Education and Sports to speed up efforts to engage and train teachers on the new curriculum.

Ssenkaaba says this is the second time learners are sitting examinations under the new curriculum, but several challenges still need to be addressed for it to succeed.

He was speaking to journalists in Wakiso, where he said the curriculum is good for learners but teachers need more guidance, especially at Advanced Level.

“I want to thank the government for this new curriculum. This is a good idea. However, especially the Advanced Level learners are facing challenges because most schools do not know what the Uganda National Examinations Board is going to set in the final examinations,” Ssenkaaba said.

He called on the National Curriculum Development Centre to clarify what Senior Six learners should expect in the forthcoming examinations.

He also said only a few schools were involved in the training conducted before the implementation of the A-Level curriculum, leaving some schools without adequate preparation.

“When the training was prepared, very few schools were conducted. This means the schools which missed the training organised regarding the A-Level curriculum may not perform well,” he said.

Ssenkaaba also appealed to parents to ensure their children report to school, saying the third term is short and important for learners’ promotion.

He encouraged learners with talents in football and other areas to make use of opportunities available to them, including scholarships.

“We want learners who are skilled,” he said.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education, led by Prof. Scovia Ssentamu, have urged teachers and other education stakeholders to attend an upcoming conference.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, Ssentamu said the pre-conference will begin on September 30, 2026, while the main conference will take place from October 1 to 2 at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

She said the conference will discuss several issues, including the current curriculum and gender in education.

“The pre-conference will begin on 30th September 2026. We shall talk about various items, including the current curriculum. We shall also discuss gender. The real conference will take place from 1st to 2nd October 2026. We therefore urge all of you to take part in this conference,” she said.

The Ministry of Education and Sports spokesperson, Dr Dennis Mugimba, also described the conference as important and encouraged the public to participate.

He also reminded teachers attending the conference to dress decently and appropriately.
