KCCA resumes weekly Weyonje Clean-up Campaign in Bukoto

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has resumed its weekly Weyonje clean-up campaign, with the latest exercise held in Bukoto, Nakawa Division, where residents were urged to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.

The KCCA team was led by Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi and the Director of Public Health and Environment, Dr Sarah Zalwango.

Kigenyi urged residents to make cleanliness a daily responsibility, saying this would help prevent diseases that can be avoided through proper hygiene and sanitation.

“I want to urge residents to always keep in mind that they are responsible for cleaning their areas of jurisdiction. As KCCA, we shall come once in a while to clean some places, but this is not enough. Remember you have waste on a daily basis, meaning if you don’t clean up and wait for KCCA to come and do it for you, you might end up getting diseases which you would have prevented if at all you cared before,” he said.

Dr Zalwango also encouraged residents to actively participate in keeping their communities clean, saying they would bear the consequences if they neglected their surroundings.

She further urged residents to sort waste at the source, noting that separating waste can also provide an opportunity for communities to earn money.

KCCA has been encouraging residents to separate waste into different categories, including biodegradable waste and plastics, which can be sold to people who make manure or recycle plastics.

Residents who participated in the clean-up welcomed the initiative but asked KCCA to improve waste collection in the area.

“We are happy that KCCA has today thought about us. We have been seeing this campaign in other places, but we are thankful that the team has today come to our place,” the residents said.

They promised to maintain cleanliness but said delayed collection of waste by KCCA trucks remains a challenge.

“When we collect the waste, KCCA trucks sometimes delay to come. So, we humbly urge the team from KCCA to please find a solution to that challenge because we produce too much waste on a daily basis,” they said.

The residents thanked KCCA for the initiative, saying improved cleanliness would help protect the community from preventable diseases such as cholera.

Meanwhile, the official National Cleaning Day event will be held in Hoima City next Saturday, with residents across the country expected to participate in cleaning activities in their respective communities.
