Acting Minister of Education and Sports Dr John C. Muyingo yesterday visited Jinja City to monitor and commission education and skills development projects aimed at improving learning environments and strengthening vocational training.
Muyingo visited Budondo Senior Secondary School, Kakira Vocational Training Institute and the Hotel and Tourism Training College to assess education interventions supported through Uganda’s partnership with Enabel and the Government of Belgium.
At Budondo Senior Secondary School, Muyingo commissioned an eco-prefabricated classroom and participated in the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of additional facilities.
He said education infrastructure is important for improving the quality of learning, but noted that the Government’s goal goes beyond building classrooms.
Muyingo said schools should provide an environment where teachers can teach effectively and learners can study in safe and dignified conditions.
He also encouraged schools to promote practical skills, digital literacy, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship to prepare young people for the changing job market.
At Kakira Vocational Training Institute, Muyingo commissioned a water supply system and participated in the ground-breaking ceremony for new construction works.
He said the water system will improve sanitation and the general learning environment, while the new facilities will strengthen the institute’s capacity to provide practical and technical training.
Muyingo said vocational training institutions are important in preparing young people with skills needed by industry and the wider labour market.
He commended Enabel and the Government of Belgium for supporting Uganda’s efforts to strengthen vocational education and skills development.
He also urged school and institutional managements, teachers, trainers and students to take ownership of the facilities and ensure they are properly maintained and used for their intended purpose.
