Tanga Odoi calls for NRM unity ahead of Adjumani West by-election

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, has called for unity among party members ahead of the upcoming Adjumani West parliamentary by-election and the Women elections.

Speaking at the NRM headquarters in Kampala, Odoi urged all party members and aspirants to respect the party’s electoral guidelines and avoid language that could create divisions.

Odoi said the NRM had won 575 positions in the district Women elections held last week, adding that no opposition candidate won any of the positions.

He also announced that the process for the Adjumani West election had started and would continue with village barazas to scrutinise the voters’ register.

Odoi warned NRM members from Adjumani East against migrating to Adjumani West to participate in the election, saying they were not eligible to take part.

He said the constituency has 99 villages and that the NRM enjoys about 95 percent support in the area, but acknowledged that internal divisions remain a challenge for the party.

Odoi said the party had lost some positions in the past because of internal divisions and pledged to resolve the disagreements ahead of the election.

The Adjumani West parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of the incumbent, Moses Ali.

Odoi further warned aspirants against violating electoral rules, saying the party has the authority to disqualify candidates who breach its regulations.

He said the NRM would use its mandate to resolve internal disputes and would officially announce its candidate after the electoral process.

Odoi also used the press conference to convey the NRM’s condolences to the people of Tooro following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
