PLU launches civic campaign for Muhoozi 2031

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has joined members and supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) to launch a civic campaign endorsing Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as a presidential candidate for the 2031 general elections.

The launch was held today at the PLU Secretariat in Kampala and was attended by several dignitaries, Members of Parliament, district chairpersons and other PLU supporters.

Tayebwa also launched an official PLU website through which members of the public will be able to register as PLU members and follow the organisation’s activities and programmes.

Tayebwa said the endorsement is a lawful and organised expression by citizens calling upon Gen. Muhoozi to accept their request to lead the country when President Yoweri Museveni retires.

He stressed that PLU is not a political party but a civic organisation that brings together Ugandans who believe in patriotism, service and national development.

Tayebwa said PLU works closely with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), describing the NRM as their political home and PLU as a civic platform through which citizens, particularly young people, can be mobilised around patriotism, national service and protection of Uganda’s gains.

Several leaders who attended the event said they would support Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba in 2031 if President Museveni does not seek another term.

They also maintained that PLU and the NRM would not field separate presidential candidates, saying both organisations are part of the same team and would support one candidate for president.

The development follows recent remarks by PLU leaders, including Hon. Kabanda, that the pressure group had resolved to support its chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for the presidency in 2031.

PLU leaders have also indicated that Gen. Muhoozi is expected to retire from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces before the elections, since serving members of the armed forces are barred by law from contesting for elective political office.

The PLU Secretary General urged members to remain committed and united as the organisation prepares for its future activities.
