Monsignor Expedito Magembe, founder of Mount Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, has been announced dead by the Archdiocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr Pius Male Ssentumbwe, on behalf of His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, Archbishop of Kampala.
“With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Monsignor Expedito Magembe of Mount Sion Bukalango, who died on 9 May 2025,” the statement read.
While the cause of death was not disclosed, it was noted that burial arrangements will be communicated in due course. Monsignor Magembe had been battling illness for an extended period. He was widely respected for his spiritual leadership and unwavering devotion. Beyond his pastoral and deliverance ministry, he was also a gifted liturgical musician.
Renowned for his powerful preaching and worship, Monsignor Magembe is credited with composing nearly 1,000 hymns and songs, many of which are included in the official Luganda Catholic hymn book Muje Tutendereze Mukama. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to sacred liturgy and Catholic music, he was awarded the prestigious Cherubim Musical Honour in February 2024. He ranks among Uganda’s most celebrated liturgical musicians, alongside figures such as Fr James Kabuye and Rev. Fr Joseph Namukangula.
Through Mount Sion and his signature Sangaalo prayer sessions, Monsignor Expedito Magembe — a man of deep prayer and unwavering spiritual energy, often seen with his iconic crucifix and large rosary — dedicated his ministry to bringing Catholics back to the Church, particularly those drawn away by Pentecostal movements. Many believe he fulfilled this mission with great success. His death leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, music, and healing that will be remembered for generations.
In other developments, following the death of Pope Francis last week, the conclave yesterday elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church. As is customary, Cardinal Prevost chose a papal name and will be known as Pope Leo XIV. Aged 69, he becomes the first American Pope in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.
On 6 February 2025, the late Pope Francis had elevated him to the order of bishops, granting him the title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano. Pope Leo XIV is noted for his belief that the Church’s pastoral role within political society is vital — serving as a vehicle for social justice and a guardian of human rights and dignity.
The Catholic Church in Uganda has extended its congratulations to the newly elected Pope and wished him God’s blessings in his new role.
