The Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Nansana municipality, Wakiso district, Mr. Yiga Barnabas Matovu, has warned all government school headteachers in the municipality to refrain from charging parents illegal dues for personal gain, as this goes against the government’s policy of free education.
Mr Yiga issued this warning while speaking to a Tiger FM reporter shortly after attending the weekly security affairs show, aired every Thursday. During the interview, he discussed a range of issues, including education matters, especially with the start of the third school term.
He condemned the impact of these illegal charges in schools, noting that they not only contribute to rising criminality among young people and teenagers in the community, but also promote early marriages and teenage pregnancies, as they may lead to children dropping out of school. He urged parents affected by such fees in public schools to report the issue for immediate assistance. He also shared his contact number, 0752 655061, for prompt and confidential reporting of such cases and other concerns to his office.
On the issue of security, he urged residents to adopt the neighbourhood watch system and collaborate with security agencies to eliminate crime in their communities.
