Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), through its Directorate of Public Health and Environment, has introduced a competition among the five city divisions to encourage residents to keep Kampala clean, with cash prizes for the winners.
The initiative was announced by the Director of Public Health and Environment, Dr. Sarah Zalwango, alongside other leaders, including Makindye Town Clerk Thomas Ssentongo, on Saturday during a community clean-up exercise in Kitalanga Zone, Kasanga Parish, Makindye Division.
According to KCCA, the competition will involve Kampala Central, Makindye, Kawempe, Rubaga and Nakawa divisions, which will be assessed on solid waste management, faecal sludge management, health inspection, greening and beautification.
Rubaga Division was crowned the overall winner in 2021, while Kawempe Division took the title last year.
Dr. Zalwango said the challenge had started with community clean-up activities and sensitisation aimed at encouraging residents to adopt proper waste management practices and take collective responsibility for maintaining clean and healthy neighbourhoods.
“We kicked off the challenge with a community clean-up and sensitisation, engaging residents on proper waste management and collective responsibility for cleaner, healthier communities. The battle for Kampala’s cleanest division starts now,” she said.
The five divisions have expressed optimism about their chances of winning, citing their preparedness for the competition.
