Nabbanja urges public to participate in national cleaning day

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has appreciated Ugandans who participated in the first national cleaning day exercise and urged the public to turn up for the upcoming exercise scheduled for the last Saturday of the month.

Speaking to journalists at her offices in Kampala, Nabbanja said the national cleaning days should be properly planned so that they do not interfere with normal work.

She directed Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) to oversee the exercises in their respective areas and called for enforcement measures to promote compliance and address issues such as illegal dumping.

Nabbanja said participation in the cleaning exercise is mandatory and warned that those who fail to comply will be held accountable under the law.

She said Seventh-day Adventists will be allowed to remain at home and later go to their places of worship after 10 a.m., but should participate in the exercise on Sunday. She also urged leaders to follow up on the arrangement.

The Prime Minister said the official cleaning exercise will take place in Nakawa Division and Wakiso District.

She added that before 10 a.m., only people travelling abroad, those responding to health emergencies and security personnel will be allowed to move.

Nabbanja appealed to the public to participate in the exercise wherever they are and avoid dumping waste. She also called on owners of trucks to support the exercise by helping transport garbage and urged local and institutional leaders to mobilise people and the necessary equipment.

She further encouraged communities to work with private waste collectors, stressing that the national cleaning day should supplement, rather than replace, daily cleaning.

Meanwhile, KCCA Director of Public Health, Dr. Sarah Zalwango, thanked government for introducing the national cleaning day, saying it will supplement the authority’s routine cleaning activities.

Zalwango urged the public to separate organic and non-organic waste and warned against burning garbage because of its impact on air quality.

She said KCCA will continue mobilising the public and coordinating garbage collection during the exercise.
