UNICEF mourns Tooro King Oyo, hails his commitment to children’s rights

UNICEF Uganda has joined the people of Uganda in mourning the death of His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, King of Tooro.

In a condolence message, UNICEF described King Oyo as a leader who championed the rights and welfare of children and young people throughout his nearly 31-year reign.

King Oyo ascended to the throne in 1995 at the age of three. UNICEF said he used his position to advocate for children’s education, health and future, noting that his voice strengthened efforts to keep girls in school, protect children from violence and harmful practices, and improve access to health services.

UNICEF said it had worked closely with the Government, local authorities, communities and the Tooro Kingdom on programmes including immunisation, nutrition, safe water and sanitation, early learning, girls’ education and child protection.

The agency also extended its condolences to the Queen Mother, the Royal Family, the Tooro Kingdom and all Ugandans affected by the King’s death, saying his example should be carried forward.
