As the campaign period for the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election draws to a close, senior National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders have intensified grassroots mobilization efforts in support of the party’s flag bearer, Idah Nabayiga.

The NRM Deputy Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Rose Namayanja, yesterday led a series of mobilization meetings in Bumangi and Bugoma villages in Mugoye Sub-county as part of the party’s village-to-village campaign strategy ahead of the June 24 by-election.

Addressing residents, Namayanja urged voters to support leaders who can effectively work with the government to deliver development and improve public service delivery.

Accompanied by Bujumba County Member of Parliament William Lugoloobi and other party leaders, Namayanja thanked the people of Kalangala for their continued support for President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM. She noted that despite stiff political competition in the Buganda region, the NRM remains a significant political force.

Meanwhile, the State Minister for Fisheries, Robert Migadde Ndugwa, dismissed claims that the government had stopped fishing activities on Uganda’s waters. He emphasized that fishermen remain free to operate, provided they use approved fishing gear and comply with fisheries regulations.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday while campaigning for NRM candidate Idah Nabayiga at Lwanabatya Landing Site in Kyamuswa County on Buseke Island.

Addressing hundreds of residents and members of the fishing community, Migadde said misinformation, particularly on social media, had created a false impression that government restrictions had halted fishing activities, a claim he strongly rejected.

The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election was necessitated by the death of former Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli in April 2026.

Polling day is scheduled for June 24, 2026. Five candidates are contesting for the seat, including NRM’s Idah Nabayiga, NUP’s Irene Nampala, and independent candidates Helen Flavia Nagawa, Agnes Nasuuna, and Sharifa Babirye.
