The Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) Party President, Hon. Jimmy Akena, during his end-of-year press conference held at the party headquarters in Kampala, emphasised the need for Ugandans to work together for a peaceful country. “As a nation, we must find a way forward to prioritise the welfare of our people, which is not currently reflected on the ground. We hope that 2025 will be a year to showcase what UPC has to offer Uganda in terms of its manifesto and service delivery, as campaigns for the 2026 general elections begin,” Akena said.

The President went on to explain that immediately after the 2021 general elections, the party began mobilisation activities. Once they received the electoral roadmap for the 2025/2026 polls from the Independent Electoral Commission, the party intensified its national mobilisation campaigns, which are still ongoing across the country in various forms. “UPC also participated in the Kisoro district Woman MP race in November 2024, although victory was not achieved. It was, however, a great reunion for the party and its members across the country in the far southwest of Uganda,” he confirmed.

According to the party president, in preparation for the 2025/2026 general elections, the party is working on internal processes, including continuous membership registration, the renewal of political leadership at all levels—from village to presidency—and the selection of party flag bearers. “This is a demanding undertaking that will involve the National Council Delegates Conference and other relevant party organs, along with education that promotes both theoretical and practical knowledge, with a focus on vocational skills,” he added.

In conclusion, Akena confirmed his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2026 general elections. “As UPC, we aim to make Uganda a better country, and that is why I will offer myself for the highest office in 2026. On behalf of the party and myself, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” he said.
