Deadly mining quarry in Kasese district has been closed

Two people were yesterday 30th November discovered dead inside a mining quarry in Musyenene one village, Nyakiyumbu Subcounty in Kasese district.

The Nyakiyumbu subcounty leadership in Kasese district has with immediate effect closed the deadly stone quarry in Musyenene one village where two people died.

Mr. Peter Sunday Kakule, the local council three chairperson for Nyakiyumbu subcounty said a crisis meeting had resolved to close the quarry which the local community partly believes, has gold.

He also said mining activities in all other area in the subcounty had temporarily been suspended during this wet season.

Mr. Peter who doubted if the said deadly quarry contains gold, said the site is a source of income for the locals and asked them to be patient until the dry season.

The two people who were discovered dead inside a mining quarry in Musyenene one village, Nyakiyumbu Sub County in Kasese district.

There has yet been no official comment from police, but the chairperson Musyenene one in Nyakiyumbu Subcounty, Mr. Wilson Kiribwangwe confirmed the information and identified the deceased as Stephen Bwambale, 28, a resident of Musyenene village, and Edward Mutebwa, 41, a resident of Kitholhu subcounty.

The incident happened when soils curved in a mining quarry in Musyenene one village Nyakiyumbu sub-county yesterday morning.

On Tuesday 29th November, a 30-year-old man was rushed to Bwera hospital in critical condition after surviving death at the same mining quarry.
