A group of 28 persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Atur Village, Alut Kot parish, Loro subcounty, on December 30, 2024, demonstrated their ability to contribute to community development.

Through their collective efforts, the Atur Disability Group has generated UGX 9 million from an initial grant of UGX 5 million provided by the Government of Uganda and the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDPU).

The funds, disbursed on May 26, 2022, were invested through a savings and loan association, enabling the group to achieve notable milestones.

The group has acquired 32 plastic chairs, uniforms, and female goats for each member, enhancing their livelihoods and community standing.

Ayena Bonny, Chairperson of the Atur Disability Group and Councilor for PWDs in Loro subcounty, highlighted the transformative impact of their efforts during a recent event celebrating their accomplishments.

Milton Okello, the subcounty focal person for PWDs, praised the group’s commitment to sustaining the grant and generating significant returns.

“Being disabled in Uganda has its merits, and the government has ensured access to education, healthcare, and other essential services for PWDs,” Okello stated.

Loro subcounty LC3 Chairperson, George Lawrence Odongo, also expressed his admiration for the group’s achievements, acknowledging their success as unparalleled among more than 20 PWD groups in the subcounty.

Community Development Officer (CDO) Christine Nyana, herself visually impaired, emphasised the importance of including PWDs in government initiatives like the Parish Development Model (PDM).

The chief guest, Francis Odongo Ali, NUDPU Chairperson for Oyam district, applauded the group’s dedication, underscoring the productive contributions PWDs make to society.

Odongo further advocated for increased funding for PWD initiatives, citing the Atur Disability Group as a shining example.

He also promised that if the group maintains its commitment, each member could receive cattle by the end of 2025, further enhancing their livelihoods.
