Philip Ogile Jakayo, the NRM Spokesperson for Oyam District who also serves as the LC3 Chairperson for Abok Sub-county, has been arrested and produced in court in connection with the ambush and attack on the vehicle of Ambassador Dickson Ogwang Okul on November 1, 2024.
The incident, which occurred at Senior Quarters in Lira city, involved the stoning of Ambassador Okul’s vehicle (registration number UBD 315D), causing damage to the vehicle and injuries to his driver and a local guard.
Jakayo, a prominent social media activist, is alleged to have orchestrated a hate campaign against Ambassador Okul while promoting Eng. Michael Odongo Okune. He is considered a key suspect in the attack.
His arrest comes in the wake of the Lira High Court ruling on October 31, 2024, which halted the coronation of Eng. Odongo Okune as the Lango Cultural Leader, a ruling believed to have triggered the violence.
While Jakayo is now in custody, police in Lira are continuing investigations to apprehend other individuals involved in both the November 1 and November 17 attacks on Ambassador Okul.
The November 17 incident, which also involved assault, is under active investigation. The Lira police have pledged to ensure that Ambassador Okul receives justice for the damage to his property and the assaults he suffered.
Further details about the charges against Mr. Jakayo and the ongoing investigation will be released as they become available.
