Museveni Directs Muhoozi to Release Anita Among From House Arrest

President Yoweri Museveni has directed the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to release former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among from house arrest, according to a statement posted by the general on X.

Muhoozi confirmed that the President had instructed him to lift the restrictions, noting that the order would be implemented without delay.

Anita Among, who continues to serve as Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament and holds a senior position in the National Resistance Movement, has been confined to her Nakasero residence in Kampala since mid-May 2026 under tight security by personnel from the Special Forces Command and police.

Her house arrest followed a series of high-profile raids under Operation Maliza Ufisadi, an anti-corruption drive sanctioned by the President and spearheaded by Muhoozi, during which joint teams of police, military, and intelligence operatives searched her properties in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda, and Bukedea District.

Investigators seized luxury vehicles including a Rolls-Royce Cullinan valued at Shs 3.4 billion, a customised Range Rover, several Mercedes-Benz models, a Lexus, and Land Cruisers, alongside cash, land titles, documents, and other valuables described as suspected proceeds of crime linked to allegations of illicit enrichment, abuse of office, and money laundering during her tenure as Speaker.

The operations came shortly after Museveni met Among at State House and after she withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament, amid growing scrutiny over her lifestyle and assets.

The Inspectorate of Government later submitted a report on the probe to the President, though Among has not been formally charged and has maintained that some of her assets were acquired through private business interests.

Her supporters, including Members of Parliament from Teso, had earlier appealed for clemency citing health concerns.

The release order marks a significant development more than three months after the raids began, though it remains unclear whether the recovered property will be returned or if further legal action will follow.
