Lango to host first-ever Won Nyaci Marathon in Lira this October

The Lango Cultural Institution has confirmed the launch of the first-ever Won Nyaci Marathon, scheduled for 24 October 2026 at Lira Mayor’s Garden, to commemorate the first anniversary of the Won Nyaci of the Lango people.

The marathon will promote cultural preservation, inclusivity and health, with activities including blood testing and blood donation alongside the main race.

Dr Jimmy Sewanyena, chairperson of the marathon organising committee, stressed the importance of reaching out to vulnerable groups and urged the people of Lango to embrace and preserve their cultural heritage.

Sewanyena said several activities would accompany the marathon, including blood testing and blood donation, aimed at promoting community health.

Hon Easy Bash Machar, Speaker of Oyam District and NRM Regional Vice-Chairperson for the Workers’ League, emphasised the importance of inclusivity, improved health and cultural identity.

Machar called on the people of Lango to participate in the marathon, saying the inaugural event should become an annual cultural and health initiative.

The marathon comes as the Lango Cultural Institution continues to promote cultural revival through initiatives such as song and drama programmes aimed at addressing social issues, including domestic violence and education.

The institution has also participated in charity runs, including support for Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s birthday marathon, reflecting its involvement in humanitarian initiatives.

The Won Nyaci Marathon is expected to bring together communities across the Lango sub-region while promoting physical wellbeing, cultural identity and social cohesion.
