Lango to Host First-Ever Won Nyaci Marathon in Lira This October

The Lango Cultural Institution has confirmed the launch of the first-ever Won Nyaci Marathon, scheduled for 24 October 2026 at Lira Mayor’s Garden, to commemorate the first anniversary of the Won Nyaci of the Lango tribe.

The event will emphasize cultural preservation, inclusivity, and health promotion, with activities such as blood testing and donation accompanying the run.
Dr. Jimmy Sewanyena chairperson organising committee in his speech Stressed the importance of reaching out to vulnerable groups and urged the people of Lango to embrace their cultural heritage.

He further revealed that several activities will accompany the marathon, including blood testing and blood donation, among others.
In his conclusion, he urged the people of Lango to embrace and preserve their cultural heritage.

He called upon the people of Lango to participate in the marathon, stressing that this first edition is set to become an annual cultural event.

The marathon comes at a time when the Lango Cultural Institution has been actively promoting cultural revival, including initiatives like song and drama programs to address social issues such as domestic violence and education.

The institution has also partnered in charity runs, such as supporting Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s birthday marathon, showing its commitment to humanitarian causes.

The Won Nyaci Marathon is set to be more than just a sporting event; it is a cultural milestone for the Lango people, blending tradition with modern health and social initiatives. With strong backing from cultural leaders and local government officials, the marathon is expected to unite communities, promote wellness, and strengthen cultural identity across the Lango sub-region.
