Omoro, Uganda – Police in the Aswa West Region have recovered a sub-machine gun stolen from Lalogi Police Station in Omoro District during an attack on a police officer in May this year.

The firearm, which had 30 rounds of ammunition at the time of the robbery, was discovered buried beneath a tree in Barolemo Village, Kalumu Parish, Paicho Sub-county, Gulu District.

According to police, the gun was discovered on 1 November by Otim Richard, who was clearing bushes around the residence of his late brother, Komakech Daniel.

Otim reportedly found a white polythene bag containing the firearm and immediately alerted the local council chairperson, who then notified security personnel.

Police said the recovered firearm was identified as the same sub-machine gun stolen on 11 May from Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Awor Beatrice, the Officer in Charge of Lalogi Sub-county Police Station.

Awor was reportedly attacked by two unidentified assailants who struck her on the head with a hammer-like object while she was resting in her accommodation during heavy rainfall.

The attackers escaped with the police firearm and 30 rounds of ammunition.

Preliminary investigations have linked the recovery to a suspected criminal network involving the late Komakech Daniel, who was arrested in June alongside two other suspects in connection with aggravated robberies and murders reported in the Aswa West and Aswa East regions.

Police further suspect that Ojok Oscar, a resident of Lalogi, masterminded the attack on the police officer.

Komakech was reportedly shot dead during a security operation after allegedly attempting to disarm a security officer, while Ojok Oscar and Opiro Vincent remain on remand over separate charges of aggravated robbery and murder.

Police spokesperson for the North Kyoga Region and acting Public Relations Officer for Aswa West and Aswa East, Superintendent of Police PJ Okema, said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack, theft and concealment of the firearm.

The public has been urged to report suspicious activities and provide information that could assist security agencies in fighting crime.
