Teachers in Oyam district have been advised to desist from the bad habit of procuring multiple loans if they are to remain strong financially.
Francis Otema, the Northern Uganda Regional Manager of Mwalimu Sacco gave the advice recently while speaking at the training of UNATU school representative training for Oyam District.
He added that some teachers have resorted to multiple borrowing from commercial banks so that they can pay back the various loans but they are charged high interest rates by some briefcase moneylenders.
Otema’s advice came after Judith Angom, a teacher of Awelobuturyo primary school presented a complaints of double deduction in her salaries by the Mwalimu Sacco.
The Chairperson Uganda National Teachers’ Union [UNATU] Oyam branch Casmiro Olobo said multiple borrowing has affected the performance of some teachers, which in turn has affected the general performance of pupils since teachers spend less of their time in teaching as they look for money outside to pay off their loans.
He added that Mwalimu sacco should release the list of teachers who are in Oyam North Sacco so that they can handle their issue administratively.
William Komakech, the Oyam Resident District Commisioer who was the chief guest during the day’s training urged the teachers to be passionate about their profession and serve the nation diligently.
He implored the teachers to use the loans to upgrade their qualifications as opposed to spending the borrowed money on luxuries.
