42-year-old woman sets own house ablaze in Myene after drinking

Residents of Acet Otwo Village in Myene Parish, Oyam District, were left in shock on Saturday, 5 September 2026, after a 42-year-old woman allegedly set her house on fire.

The woman, identified as Eunice Tino, a member of the Atek Angullu clan and mother of more than four children, is alleged to have set her six-room house ablaze at around 5pm.

Tino, who was reportedly known in the community for excessive alcohol consumption, was said to have been heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident. The fire completely destroyed the house and all its contents, including food, clothes, utensils and other household property.

Speaking to our reporter, Opio Tonny, the LC1 chairperson of the area, confirmed the incident. He said Tino told him that she had been frustrated by family disputes.

According to Tonny, Tino said that after the death of her husband, she was left with four cows, which were later sold by her children. She reportedly asked her children to give her a share of the proceeds to enable her to construct a modern house, but they allegedly ignored her request, leaving her deeply disappointed.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions among community members. Some described the act as shameful and unacceptable, while others urged residents to seek peaceful ways of resolving family disputes rather than resorting to destructive actions.

At press time, Tino was still being detained at Acimi Police Station as investigations into the incident continued.
