Oyam Urban Archdeaconry’s Archdeacon, Rev. Can Robert Edinga, has urged the Anglican community to unite in prayer as the Church of Uganda prepares to receive a new Archbishop.

Speaking during the second service this morning at St Peters church Anyeke, Rev.Can Edinga emphasized that this is a sacred moment in the life of the church, as the incoming Archbishop will succeed His Most Grace Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, who has faithfully led the Province of the Church of Uganda.

He called on believers to pray for God’s guidance, wisdom, and strength for the new Archbishop, so that he may shepherd the flock with humility and vision. Rev. Edinga reminded the faithful that transitions in church leadership are not only administrative but deeply spiritual, requiring the support and intercession of the entire Anglican community.

He encouraged congregations across Uganda to dedicate time for prayer and thanksgiving, trusting that God will continue to bless the church through its new leader.

Rev. Edinga also commended Archbishop Kaziimba Mugalu for strengthening the Anglican faith by standing firm against supporting homosexuality. He asked Christians to pray that God provides a leader with the same conviction, as West Lango Diocese prepares to receive Archbishop Kaziimba for his farewell in September this year, 2026.

Meanwhile, former Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi, while addressing graduates at Uganda Christian University recently, cautioned against campaigning for Archbishop Kaziimba’s successor. He urged Ugandans to pray for God’s guidance in choosing the next leader, warning that campaigning could produce “a half-cooked product of the devil.”

Archbishop Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu will officially retire on August 15, 2027, upon reaching the Church’s mandatory retirement age of 65. He has already begun farewell visits across dioceses in preparation for this transition.
