The Office of the President, working through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, has delivered 110,653 hoes to Oyam District.
Each household registered in the 2024 National Population and Housing Census will receive one hoe. The initiative is aimed at supporting families to increase food production and improve their livelihoods.
The District Production and Marketing Officer, Mr Albino Cox Ogwal, confirmed the arrival of the hoes and emphasised that distribution will be carried out fairly across all sub-counties. He clarified that only households recorded during the 2024 census will benefit, meaning those established after the census exercise will not receive the tools.
The Resident District Commissioner, Mr James Shilaku, explained that government support is directed to Oyam due to its strong agricultural base. He encouraged households to use the hoes to boost food production, stressing that this was a presidential pledge to strengthen agriculture. He urged beneficiaries not to sell the tools but to put them to productive use.
The District Police Commander, Mr Francis Okongo, cautioned against misappropriation or diversion of the hoes. He assured residents that security agencies will ensure the tools reach the rightful households. He warned that Ugandan law applies equally to all individuals and offices, citing examples of accountability from high-ranking officials.
The hoes were officially received by local leaders, including LCIII chairpersons, sub-county chiefs, and agricultural extension officers from all sixteen sub-administrative units of Oyam District.
Among them were Mr Denis Anyeki, LCIII Chairperson of Oyam Town Council, and Mr James Ogwal, LCIII Chairperson of Myene Sub-county. They welcomed the programme, promising accurate delivery under close official supervision. They noted that the tools will help households improve farming and strengthen food security.
