Twenty-one young people from the Lango Sub-region who were stranded in Hoima City after being deceived with fake job offers are now on their way back to Oyam District.

The rescue was coordinated by the Oyam South Member of Parliament, Hon. Patrick Ogwang Obura, who intervened after learning of their plight.

The youths had been misled by a Chinese company that promised them employment but instead transported them to Kyankwanzi District to clear large forested areas.

Many of the victims are from Aleka Sub-county, Abok, Loro, Kamdini, and Iceme. Sadly, two youths from Iceme have recently died, highlighting the dangers of such fraudulent schemes.

Hon. Ogwang confirmed that he provided food and accommodation to the stranded youths yesterday. He is also working closely with Oyam Central Police Station to ensure their safe return to the Lango Sub-region, particularly Oyam District. Investigations into the company responsible have already commenced.

With deep concern, Mr Ogwang urged parents not to allow their children to travel for employment without first verifying the legitimacy of the companies involved.

The District Police Commander for Hoima City confirmed the presence of the youths and assured that efforts are underway to facilitate their return home.

Mr Geoffrey Ojok Eyep, a former LC5 councillor for Aleka Sub-county, said he received a distress call from the youths and immediately directed them to Hoima Police while contacting higher authorities.

Two of the affected youths, Mr Ivan Okello from Abok and Mr Agip Stephen from Aleka Sub-county, shared their ordeal. They explained that they were promised a monthly salary of UGX 250,000 but ended up stranded, exploited, and without support.

Authorities have strongly warned parents and guardians to remain vigilant when approached with job opportunities for their children. Verification of employment offers is essential to prevent exploitation, suffering, and loss of life.

Communities are encouraged to report suspicious recruitment activities to local leaders and police stations immediately.

This incident serves as a wake-up call for stronger regulation and monitoring of employment agencies to protect young people from fraudulent schemes. It also highlights the urgent need for collective community action to safeguard the future of the youth.
