Oyam District secures Shs2 billion for road maintenance in next financial year

This announcement followed a productive meeting between Oyam District leaders and the Commissioner in charge of Local Government at the Ministry of Finance. The delegation was led by District Chairman Nelson Adea Akar, and included Speaker Hon. Easy Bash, Hon. Patrick Ogwang Obura, Vice Chairperson Hon. Apali Ceaser, CFO Pony Morris, Secretary for Health Hon. Anna Ongom, Secretary for Production Hon. Betty Acomo, and IT officer Marvin.

During the meeting, the leaders requested an increase in road maintenance funding from Shs1 billion to Shs2 billion. They also raised concerns regarding the progress of Oporowie Comprehensive Seed School, the construction of Iceme Sub-county headquarters, and ex-gratia payments for local council chairpersons in newly created town councils within Oyam District.

Speaking after the meeting, District Chairman Nelson Adea Akar confirmed that Oyam is among only six districts under consideration by the President due to their extensive road networks. He noted that while not all districts will benefit, government has approved support for those with large road coverage.

Mr Adea further urged residents awaiting ex-gratia payments to remain patient, assuring them that the funds are being processed. He called on the people of Oyam to focus on development rather than political party affiliation, stressing that this is a time for service delivery, not politics.

Speaking to our reporter this morning, Speaker of Oyam District, Hon. Bashir Easy Bash Machar, said he, together with the District Chairman and other officials, has committed to working collectively to attract development to the district, particularly in the roads sector and other priority areas.

He noted that Oyam District currently has no direct road linking to the district headquarters, despite its large size and extensive road network. He added that politics is now secondary, stressing that the focus is on unity and development for a better Oyam. He further pledged that corruption will not be tolerated in the district, stating that anyone involved in corrupt practices would not be considered his ally.
