Abura Primary School in Nambyeso subcounty, Kwania district, is grappling with severe infrastructural challenges, leaving pupils to study in unsafe and unhygienic conditions.
The school’s headteacher, Ecingo Ronald, revealed that the school’s facilities have deteriorated since 2016, when a presidential rally was held at the school. Soldiers who later settled at the school damaged property, using desks and rooftops for firewood and cooking. Despite efforts to seek compensation and restoration, no progress has been made.
With only 50 desks available, pupils in Primary One and Two are forced to sit on the floor, while Primary Five pupils study in a dilapidated structure that jeopardises their safety, particularly during strong winds and heavy rainfall.
Teacher Paska Tali lamented the poor classroom conditions, saying pupils return home covered in dust due to the damaged floors. Frustrated parents, led by Egea Tom, a school representative, have warned that if the government does not address the issue, they will withhold their votes in 2026.
A pupil at the school pleaded with well-wishers to support their school as the rainy season approaches, which could further worsen their learning conditions.
Stakeholders and authorities are being urged to intervene immediately to renovate classrooms, provide desks, and ensure the safety of the learners.
