Oyam South MP restores boreholes, 6,000 residents celebrate clean water access

Over 6,000 residents of Myene Sub-county and Loro Sub-county in Oyam South Constituency, Oyam District, are celebrating after their Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Lango Parliamentary Group, Patrick Ogwang Obura, repaired two boreholes that had long been out of service.

The boreholes, located in Aweingwec Village in Alidi Parish, Loro Sub-county, and Awe-Mingo Village in Zuma Parish, Myene Sub-county, had contributed to a severe water crisis in the surrounding communities.

Mark Akona, the LC1 Chairperson of Aweingwec Village, expressed gratitude, noting that residents previously faced challenges such as competition for water, which led to conflict and mistrust among locals.

Moses Ajuke, the NRM Chairperson of Zuma Parish, also appreciated the MP’s intervention but noted that two other boreholes in Opyelkene and Aweilut villages remain non-functional, calling for further support.

Fihona Atim, a resident of Aweingwec Village and manager of Acwec Omio Cooperative Society Limited, explained that before the repairs, communities relied on unsafe water sources, including drinking from dams shared with animals, which led to cases of diarrhoea. She praised Patrick Ogwang Obura for his intervention and urged residents to properly maintain the boreholes.

Excited residents from both Zuma and Alidi parishes expressed their joy, saying the repairs had restored hope and dignity to their villages.
