Works Ministry launches rehabilitation of 48km Minakulu–Zambia–Kamdini Road

The Ministry of Works and Transport has officially launched the rehabilitation of the 48-kilometre Minakulu–Zambia–Kamdini Road after nearly five years without maintenance.

The restoration of the road has renewed hope among residents of Minakulu Town Council, Minakulu Sub-county, Myene, and Kamdini Sub-county, who rely on the route for farming, marketing, and other community activities, particularly during the agricultural season.

Speaking during the launch, Hon Patrick Ogwang Obura, Member of Parliament for Oyam South Constituency, commended the Ministry for its commitment to rehabilitating key roads in the district, including the Loro–Oyam District Headquarters Road and the Minakulu–Oyam Town Council Road.

He said the swamp connecting Minakulu to Oyam Town Council through Tochi, which has for years disrupted movement, will also be addressed.

Ogwang pledged to monitor government institutions and road projects to ensure accountability, stressing that contractors must deliver according to approved specifications.

“If a road is meant to be four kilometres, it must be completed as four kilometres,” he said, while calling on residents to support government efforts by protecting public infrastructure.

Ogwang added that he recently joined the State Minister for Works and Transport in monitoring central government road projects across Lango, including the Lira–Mbale, Soroti Road, Apac–Rwekunye–Lira–Purang, and Lira–Kamdini roads. He also accompanied the Minister to inspect the road connecting Amii in Apac District to Oyam District through Aber Sub-county.

Richard Okello Emuna, LC3 Chairperson of Minakulu Town Council, thanked the Ministry for restoring the road and urged residents to cooperate with contractors. He cautioned against theft of fuel and collusion with workers to misuse project resources.

Hamad Saidi Otim, LC5 Councillor for Minakulu Town Council, praised Oyam’s Members of Parliament for putting aside political differences to prioritise development.

He acknowledged that road rehabilitation may temporarily affect market vendors but said measures are being taken to protect their livelihoods, especially as construction of the market continues.

Christine Aweti, a resident of Minakulu Trading Centre B, welcomed the government intervention, saying heavy rains had previously caused flooding, with water entering homes and blocking the road, creating difficulties for residents.

The rehabilitation of the Minakulu–Zambia–Kamdini Road is expected to improve transport, trade, agricultural marketing, and social services across Oyam District.
