Police at Loro Town Council Police Station are holding in custody the Town Agent of Western Ward and LC1 Chairperson of Eponga Village for alledge extortion
Police at Loro Town Council Police Station are holding in custody the Town Agent of Western Ward, Loro Town Council, Nyandiri Evaline, together with the LC1 Chairperson of Eponga Village, Jonga France, for allegedly extorting money from residents during livestock registration.
The two reportedly collected sums of 2,000, 3,000, and 5,000 shillings from community members depending on their status, in exchange for being registered and profiled under the cattle restocking program.
Speaking to our reporter Robert Ekwaro, the LC3 Chairperson of Loro Town Council confirmed the arrests. He explained that since yesterday was a public holiday, he had gone to rest early, but later discovered numerous missed calls alerting him to the matter. His follow-up led to the arrests, which were ordered by the RDC of Oyam District.
Ekwaro expressed disappointment with the police at Loro Town Council Station, accusing them of reluctance to record statements due to hidden interests. He noted that only after realizing the RDC was aware did they proceed to document the case as investigations continue.
Attempts to obtain a comment from RDC Oyam, Sgt. Shilako James, were unsuccessful by press time.
According to the Penal Code Act (Cap. 120), Section 305 of the Uganda Constitution, anyone arrested for extorting money from communities during the cattle restocking program faces charges of extortion, corruption, and abuse of office. These offenses carry serious penalties, including imprisonment, fines, and permanent disqualification from holding public office.
