He passed away on Wednesday, 4th December 2026, at Mulago National Referral Hospital after developing serious health complications. He was rushed to the hospital by Patrick Ogwang Obura, who is vying for the Oyam South Member of Parliament seat in the 2026 elections.

A sombre moment as mourners, including NRM supporters wearing party colours, gather at the burial of the late Hon. Awal Tom Walter in Loro sub county, Oyam district.

Hon. Benson Walter Dila Oyuku, LC V Chairperson of Oyam district, expressed the district’s commitment to supporting Awal’s family. He announced a special opportunity for one of Awal’s female orphans, who is pursuing a diploma in education at Muni University.

Patrick Ogwang Obura, a member of the NRM secretariat, extended his gratitude to all those who supported Awal during his illness, particularly in his final days at Mulago National Hospital.

“Awal’s legacy of service will live on through all who loved him,” Ogwang Obura said.

In his remarks, Ogwang Obura also called for unity and love among the community, urging people to rise above divisions based on religion, political affiliation, or clan.

Hon. Nommy Otyeno, Speaker of the Oyam District Local Government Council, commended the NRM leadership in Oyam for standing by their party member, the late Walter Awal, who tirelessly worked for the progress of the NRM in the district.

Otyeno encouraged people to strive to belong to a community group for collective progress.

Notably, Otyeno is one of the 12 male candidates contesting for the Oyam South Member of Parliament seat in the 2026 general election.
