Oyam blind student seeks digital support to access education

Two people with disabilities in Oyam District appeal for support with education and leadership responsibilities.

Ojok Innocent, a blind orphan currently in Senior Four at St Francis School for the Blind in Soroti, has received support from Citizen Voice and Action (CVA) Practitioners since his early primary education in Gulu. His tuition is covered by Chain Foundation.

Speaking to our reporter recently, Innocent said he is facing challenges adapting to the new curriculum, which requires extensive research and access to digital resources. He is seeking support to acquire a laptop and smartphone to help him meet his academic demands and improve his learning experience.

Meanwhile, Opito Ronald, who became blind in 2016, has continued to serve his community despite his disability. He is the Deputy Speaker of Minakulu Sub-county Local Government and also cares for his wife, child and three orphaned siblings.

In his appeal, Opito said he urgently needs a smartphone to effectively perform his duties, including accessing council order papers and official documents. He said the device would enable him to continue representing persons with disabilities and fulfilling his leadership responsibilities.

Farash Ojok Ali, the mobiliser for Citizen Voice and Action Practitioners in Minakulu and Myene sub-counties, has called on well-wishers, organisations and other members of the public to provide financial or material support to the two individuals.

He emphasised that their appeals highlight both the educational and leadership needs of persons with disabilities in Oyam District, adding that timely support would empower them to continue contributing positively to their communities.
