This follows a public outcry from members of the Oyam North Teachers SACCO, who claim that Obong Morish, the Chairperson of WALIMU SACCO—a national SACCO for Ugandan teachers—has been carrying out illegal deductions from teachers’ salaries for the last two years without their knowledge or consent, for loans they did not borrow.
Christ Odongo, a teacher at Amaji Primary School, and Richard Odongo Tim from Awelobutoryo Primary School stated that Obong’s unlawful actions have caused significant hardship for the affected teachers, resulting in implications such as gender-based violence, divorce, and, in some cases, their children being forced to drop out of school. They have called for the intervention of various stakeholders, especially district officials.
Morris Obong, Chairperson of Oyam North WALIMU SACCO, has equally condemned the allegations regarding the deductions from Oyam North Teachers SACCO. He called upon his members to remain united as they work towards resolving the issue.
Speaking to our reporter, Benson Walter Dilla Oyuku confirmed that he has already taken legal action, as he believes what WALIMU is doing in Oyam in connivance with Obong Morish is illegal.
Several attempts to get a comment from Mr Otema, the WALIMU Regional Manager for the Northern Region, were unsuccessful, as his known contact number was unavailable by press time.
