Oyam District commemorated International Women’s Day on Thursday, March 27, 2025, with a grand celebration attended by over 2,000 people from 16 sub-counties, town councils, and learning institutions.
The event, themed “Accelerating Action for Gender Equality,” emphasized the urgent need for education, economic empowerment, and equal opportunities for women.
Ms. Janet Acan Priscovia, District Women’s League Chairperson, stressed that achieving gender equality requires collaborative efforts from communities, schools, churches, government leaders, and politicians. She called for greater investment in women-focused initiatives to ensure a more sustainable and prosperous future for women in Oyam.
Hon. Mary Aceng, District Councillor for Kamdini Town Council and Sub-county, raised concerns over the alarming rate of school dropouts among girls, many of whom are forced into petty businesses and prostitution due to financial constraints.
“The future of any community is built on education. Without it, we are raising a generation without hope,” she stated.
Hon. Benson Walter Dila Oyuku, LCV Chairperson of Oyam District, emphasized men’s role in fostering gender equality.
“Men must take responsibility for their wives’ well-being and provide them with the necessities of womanhood,” he urged.
The Guest of Honour, Hon. Santa Alum Ogwang, Oyam District Woman MP, commended the resilience and determination of women striving for success through education and entrepreneurship.
She assured the people of Oyam that she is committed to championing gender equality both locally and at the national level.
To crown the celebrations, Hon. Santa Alum Ogwang donated UGX 300,000 to each of the eight women’s groups from different sub-counties.
The event sparked important conversations and commitments, from addressing gender inequality in education to urging government support for women’s empowerment.
