Oyam Leaders Raise Concern Over Rising Male Deaths Linked to Poor Health Habits

29 August 2025, 9:26 pm

Health officials in Oyam District are raising alarm over a troubling increase in male deaths caused by preventable illnesses, which they attribute to poor health-seeking behaviour.

Speaking during the commissioning of Okwir Health Centre III in Okwir Parish, Iceme Sub County, Assistant District Health Officer Caroline Agaro noted that many men are dying from conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and hepatitis due to delays in seeking medical attention. She urged men to prioritize early medical check-ups, emphasizing that such visits could save lives.

Hon. Betty Owani Apili, District Councillor for Otwal and Secretary for Health in the Oyam District Local Government, described the trend as a harmful norm rooted in the Lango region. She pointed to cultural beliefs and social attitudes that discourage men from taking their health seriously. According to her, this behaviour is not only prevalent among adult men but is also spreading among youth and juveniles. Instead of visiting health facilities, many are turning to substance abuse, including smoking and alcoholism.

She appealed to cultural leaders, regional influencers, and non-governmental organizations to help shift community attitudes toward health.

Sgt. James Shilaku, the Resident District Commissioner for Oyam, added a fatherly appeal, encouraging men to abandon harmful habits and become more involved in family health matters. He said that when men accompany their wives to antenatal visits, it provides emotional support to mothers and strengthens family bonds.

The newly commissioned Okwir Health Centre III is expected to improve access to healthcare services in the region. However, officials emphasized that infrastructure alone is not enough—behavioural change remains essential.
