In a major step toward improving rural connectivity, 13 culverts have been successfully repaired in Nuyo village, along the swampy stretch linking Minakulu town council and Minakulu subcounty to Kong trading centre. The route crosses into Myene subcounty and extends to Nwoya district. These culverts, previously installed but left broken and impassable for over five years, had severely disrupted transportation, trade, and access to essential services.

The repair initiative was spearheaded by Hon. Geoffrey Owili, a parliamentary aspirant for Oyam South Constituency under the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) ticket. Speaking at the site yesterday, Hon. Owili emphasised the importance of restoring infrastructure in underserved communities, noting that the swamp crossing had long posed serious challenges for farmers, traders, and schoolchildren.

Richard Amony, LC Chairperson of Woro Mite village, praised Owili’s commitment, stating that for over five years, the community had suffered underdevelopment due to road accidents, business collapse, low commodity prices, school dropouts, and women giving birth on the roadside while trying to reach hospitals. He commended Owili for his compassion and dedication to the people who rely on this road.

Tom Ogweng, LC2 Chairperson of Oyoro parish in Myene subcounty, described Owili as a politician who stays close to the people. He called on all residents of Oyam South to send Owili to the 12th Parliament, saying, “He is not a pretender like other politicians. Owili is a true servant of the Oyam South community—a leader who doesn’t care about titles but about service.”

James Opio, a businessman from Abulolyec Trading Centre—locally known as Apit Pe Ool—shared that the broken road had led to business failure and economic stagnation. He expressed optimism that trade will now flourish thanks to the rehabilitation led by Geoffrey Owili.

Emmanuel Opio, a Primary Four pupil from Abulolyec Primary School, testified that the poor road conditions had kept many children at home, unable to attend school. He thanked Owili for the repairs and urged his classmates to prepare for the next term, now that the road is passable.

Stella France Okeca and Tonny Okello, residents of Myene subcounty, could not hide their excitement. They called on the people of Oyam South to support Owili, praising his kind heart and commitment to community development.

The newly rehabilitated culverts are engineered to withstand seasonal flooding, ensuring year-round access between Minakulu and surrounding villages. Local residents expressed deep relief and gratitude, hopeful that this marks the beginning of broader development in Oyam South Constituency.

This project reflects UPC’s wider commitment to rural transformation and equitable service delivery, especially in historically marginalised areas.
