A landmark 3 billion, 81 million, 23,180 shillings Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facility project, including classroom construction and renovations funded by the European Union, was launched in Oyam District with a site handover held at Acaba Secondary School and five Primary Schools including Anyeke, Acet, Ngai, Wigweng, and Tegony on March 17, 2026.
The project officially set to begin on March 27 and is expected to be completed by the end of December is aim to improve sanitation in schools and address challenges that hinder the transition of girls and boys from primary to secondary education.
At Acaba Secondary School, construction will include four stance latrines for boys and four for girls, each in one block, eight classrooms in two blocks, and one classroom house block. At Acet Primary School, there will be ten stance latrines for girls, five stance VIP latrines for boys, and renovations of two classrooms and two staff houses.

Wigweng Primary School will receive two stance VIP latrines for staff, six for girls, and four for boys. Tegony Primary School will have two stance latrines for staff, five for boys, and twelve for girls. Ngai Primary School will benefit from two staff latrines, eight for boys, ten for girls, and additional VIP latrines for staff, boys, and girls.
Speaking at the launch, Christ Ongom, Vice Chairman of Oyam District Local Government, appreciated the selection of schools, noting their high student populations.
Deputy CAO Joel Ojedra urged the contractor to recruit local residents to support the project, while Inspector of Schools Sam Openy emphasized cooperation between contractors and the surrounding communities.
Senior Engineer Robert Owiny cautioned the contractor against shoddy work and stressed adherence to timelines.
Peter Okodo, Executive Director of Akol Construction Holdings Limited, thanked the ministry and district government, inviting local community members to apply for work opportunities. Simon Peter Okeng, Headteacher of Acaba Secondary School, expressed gratitude for the project, saying the new facilities will ease challenges caused by the overwhelming student population.
