Honourable Dr Eunice Apio Otuku, the Oyam North Area Member of Parliament, Addressing the press at Oryemapat bridge.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has delivered 160 Amco culverts to assist in the reconstruction of Oryemapat Bridge, following the efforts of Oyam North Member of Parliament, Dr Eunice Apio Otuku.

Speaking to journalists recently at Oryemapat Bridge, Dr Apio confirmed that the culverts have been secured at Ngai Outpost for safekeeping, awaiting the deployment of government workers to begin the reconstruction. She assured that fuel for the project is available in Gulu, with only local suppliers and engineers still to be dispatched.

Dr Apio further highlighted two major challenges delaying the project. Firstly, the absence of workers, as interviews for potential candidates are still ongoing following the termination of previous contracts under UNDR. Secondly, the Lango Sub-region currently has no registered suppliers on the ministry’s list, which is contributing to the delay.

Concluding her remarks, Dr Apio reiterated the government’s commitment to initiating the tarmacking process. However, financial constraints remain an issue, particularly regarding compensation for landowners affected by the road expansion. She noted that measurements for the Korner Molem-Aboke-Iceme-Bobi road will soon begin, and affected landowners will be engaged through corporate social responsibility agreements. She assured residents that she would be present to witness the agreements, alongside Opio Acuti for Kole and another representative for Omoro.

Local business owners have expressed concerns over the impact of the bridge’s closure. Brian Oloa, a boda boda rider from Adyeny Trading Centre, lamented the decline in business, stating that the bridge’s closure has significantly reduced their income compared to previous years. He urged the government to expedite the repairs.

Similarly, Imat Stell, speaking on behalf of hotel operators in Adyeny Trading Centre, expressed frustration over the financial losses incurred since the bridge became impassable. She emphasised the urgency of the reconstruction, highlighting that women and children are particularly vulnerable while navigating the damaged route. She recalled a recent incident in which a student lost all their scholastic materials in the water due to the unsafe conditions.

The community continues to urge the government to prioritise the reconstruction of Oryemapat Bridge, ensuring both safety and economic stability for the region.
